North Shaanxi Road

Jing'an's Easygoing Food, Drink and Local Life Corridor

August 12, 2026

If Yanping Road and Wuding Road feel like one of Shanghai’s most compact food-and-drink neighbourhoods, North Shaanxi Road (Shaanxi Bei Lu / 陕西北路) is the slightly broader, more lived-in version.

Running through the heart of Jing’an, this stretch of central Shanghai quietly does a bit of everything:

  • neighbourhood restaurants
  • relaxed bars
  • cafés
  • international dining
  • old residential lanes
  • easy access to some of the city’s best-known expat hangouts

The appeal is that it does not feel like a “destination district”. It is not trying to impress visitors. Instead, it feels like a place people actually use — somewhere locals and international residents come back to regularly because it is convenient, comfortable, and reliable.

You can meet friends for dinner, stop by for a drink after work, grab coffee on a weekend morning, or simply walk around and discover small corners of Jing’an.

For many Shanghai residents, North Shaanxi Road represents something increasingly valuable: central city living without the feeling of being in the middle of a tourist zone.

Yang’s Dumplings is an institution here and they hold a location on North Shaanxi. The perfect place for searing hot dumplings during the colder winter months or a quick respite from the heat. Their dumplings and noodles are wallet-friendly and stomach-filling. Be careful of that soup in the dumplings — it’s both delicious and ready to explode with flavour — quite literally.

A North Shaanxi Kinda’ Day!

You want to make the most of the day but feel you need a little caffeine fix first to give you an extra kick. Head to Todos Los Dias (a cosy coffee shop serving up freshly made scones alongside their coffee) or Sigh at Whoopso. This place is fairly new to the area and attracts the internet crowds (like many other spots in this article, here’s our Xiaohongshu-famous spots article) at the moment. Expect it to be busy, but with the hustle and hype comes some very interesting coffee flavours. I won’t give too much away. Stop by and taste for yourself.

Mi Shang Prada Rong Zhai is Prada’s first permanent restaurant/cafe in Asia. Located at 186 of the same infamous street, it serves refined Mediterranean food and crisp wine in an iconic villa. Neapolitan pastas sit alongside grilled fresh tuna and lemon desserts in this grand and imposing building. The setting is sophisticated, not a place for a budget-friendly meal, but it is very much Shanghai!

If you want to veer just slightly off course, head to ShangKang Li just behind Juanitos. Here you will find places such as Alimentari, a great Italian restaurant that dominates many of Shanghai’s streets these days – their best one is over on Anfu Road. Homeslice for a taste of one of Shanghai’s best pizza slices and a drink with friends. Drunk Baker providing the courtyard with quality tea and coffee along with their pastries. We also have a Spanish bar renowned for their sangria and paella. A favourite during the city’s hotter months. Their terrace is a great place to spend the afternoon and slip right into the night.

Shanghai Directory Verdict

North Shaanxi Road is one of Jing’an’s most dependable lifestyle streets — central, social, and easy to live around. It does not have the postcard beauty of Wukang Road or the concentrated café scene of Yanping Road, but for everyday Shanghai life, it is one of the city’s strongest neighbourhood choices. The street is lived in. Here, history and culture is etched into the street. Not overly polished: but a living, breathing piece of Shanghai’s finest culture and history.
